Window Treatment Questions

Q. Can I get a tax break for installing window treatments?
A. According to the Internal Revenue Service, shutters are the only window treatment that can be considered a capital improvement. Whether used on windows, French doors or patio doors, wood shutters add real value to your home.  You can even add the cost of the shutters to your new home mortgage.

Q. Does it matter what windows look like from the outside?
A. You want to make sure that when seen from the exterior of your house, no single window stands out. Also drapery, blind or shade colors should not clash with the façade of the house. Your window fashions should go virtually unnoticed from the outside yet contribute to the architectural character of your house.

Q. Where can I buy window treatments?
A. You can buy window treatments in home furnishings stores, home centers, paint and tile stores and through a decorator. You can also purchase window treatments on-line or from a mail-order catalogue or by phone. The only problem with this method is that you're responsible for the accuracy of measurements; if they don't fit properly, it's your problem.
